Artist's Comments

When "Francis the Mute" came out, it absolutely blew my mind. I had never heard anything like The Mars Volta before I bought that album, and I've heard very little like it since.

A lot of TMV fans seem divided as to which is the better album, "Francis" or their debut album, "De-Loused in the Comatorium." I have no real preference, they are both incredibly good progtacular albums.

"Amputechture" on the other hand, is something akin to musical blueballs. I am a little let down, and I might be the only TMV fan that agrees.

Whatever. Omar is the one of those most responsible for the uniqueness of the TMV sound, being both the guitarist and the composer of most of the non-lyrical material on the albums.

I love the interpretation of Omar here. im patial to Frances myself. i didnt think amputecture was quite as good.

Amputechture was sort of dull, something of like 80 minutes of waiting for the album to really start kicking ass when it never did. Both the other albums plus the Trumulant EP were all dynamite. I'm glad to see somebody agrees that the magic just sort of isn't there on this album.

Thanks for the fave on this, BTW.

Francis the Mute is the only one I have heard, but it is pretty awesome. I never get tired of that first song especially.

I like, once again, the way you handled the lines in the face, and I like the curly cues too.

I made him look a good bit older than he really is, but I'm doing these portraits very fast and without any reference once I do the initial sketch.

Glad you like it, though.

Well, why do charicatures if you can't take a few liberties.

That's certainly true.

Its not that the magic isn't there dude...it is :)
It's all about the having the right frame of mind. A very specific frame of mind. I myself loved it off the bat, were as I disliked Frances the first time I heard it, because I started with De loused ( though it is now an absolute favorite of mine ). I'm crazy about Amp, because I let TMV take me where ever they want to take me. Perhaps you'll love it as much as FTM in time. I hope you do! Maybe not. Anyways, I can't friggin' wait for their next album! Yay!

TMV FTW

This is a good attitude to go into a new album with, I suppose. Although I've listened to it a few good times and have not been able to appreciate it. I don't always absolutely love an album the first time... Blood Mountain by Mastodon and Lateralus by Tool are two good examples. The first couple of times through, I just couldn't grasp everything and it didn't sound as good as it does after several listens.

But I was totally on board for both other TMV albums and I just can't get into Amputechture. I'm still willing to believe I haven't given it enough time. But I can only spend so much time looking for the candy center of an album--eventually I'll just have to admit it's not for me.

De-loused in the comatorium blew my mind indeed! The first thing I thought when they started off, was: Damn, what the hell is THIS?! O.O (in a positive way :P)
I haven't heard songs from FracisTM yet, but I'm probably gonna buy that one too. I guess it can't be worse than Amputechture...

I really love the way you painted this as well! It looks really good.
