Artist's Comments

Let's get this out of the way. I used to really like Japanese Cartoons. But TV and american culture have become increasingly saturated by garbage meant only for brainless children and people who like whatever cartoon feces gets pooped out of Japan. Not only that, but every gutless animation studio had decided that they're all going to cash in on the fad and have created about a billion terrible shows that try their best to look like the worst of overseas animation.

One Piece is exactly why I got into anime in the first place. It's different, interesting, and created by people with imagination. One of my friends told me that Eichiro Oda, the artist behind the One Piece Manga created a notebook of goofy ideas that he wanted to see in a comic as a kid but never did. So, he just started putting them in his own comic, and hasn't run out yet, even after nearly a ten year stretch and 400+ chapters in the manga.

At this point, I don't remember what made me think to draw this image. It might have been subliminal since I saw Akira Toriyama draw a similar image for his Dr. Slump characters in one of the earlier collections. However, I think the characters personalities fit pretty well to the characters. Here's my thinking behind it, if you don't know the characters or can't piece it together yourself:

Luffy is the Straw Man. He wears a woven straw hat (Mugiwara Boshi) and is almost completely brainless.
Roronoa Zoro is the Tin Man. You could easily call Zoro heartless. He's killed about a hundred people in the comic, while the other characters generally don't kill any of the villians. Also, the Tin Man was the only one of the bunch that carries what could be considered a weapon, and since Zoro uses three katanas, I thought it would be fun to draw him with three axes.
Nami is Dorothy, and at first it was only because she was "the girl" and that was that. But looking at from her perspective, she's totally been taken out of her element and thrown into a crazy adventure with a bunch of wackos. That, and the Grand Line sea they're sailing is as strange and unpredictable as Oz. So that actually worked out better than I thought.
Sanji is Dorothy's loyal pooch, Toto. This makes me laugh. Sanji's a horny bastard who'll do damn near anything for a girl. So, he becomes Nami's lapdog in this picture.
My favorite character, Usopp, is the cowardly lion. I like this a lot because Usopp on the surface appears very cowardly, but he has the ability and intelligence to be as strong as any one of the crew. One of the major sub-plots of One Piece is about Usopp growing up to become a "brave warrior of the sea," not unlike the how the lion wanted to ask the Wizard for courage.

One Piece is great. That's about all I can say.

Glad you like it. A color version is on my rather lengthy to-do list. I'll be sure to post it when I finish the damn thing. The lineart took forever.

This is quite demented here. I've never heard of one piece before, but it sounds very interesting. The drawing is excellent, and so is the logo type. The cowardly lion guy scares the shit out of me. The which reminds of of the rock-witch chick from guilty gear, but the rock witch is probably a rip off of this character. But anyway, your line work is excellent, and the composition is very nice. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it an A.

Too bad Usopp scares the shit out of you. He's my favorite character.

The Guilty Gear character I-No, as far as I know, isn't based on Robin at all. The Characters don't normally look this way, I dressed them up as Wizard of Oz characters as a metaphor. So, Robin doesn't wear a witch hat.

One Piece is great, though. I hate lots of anime but love One Piece. Thank you for the A. It'll go nicely with my F+.

....You have no idea how ridiculously close this picture was to my thoughts recently.

You see, my old high school was doing "The Wiz" for their musical, and in the meantime, I thought about how One Piece and their characters would fit in, as I love One Piece and wait for every episode to come out on K-F (Yea, you know what I'm talking about, I'm "Smartz118" at the forums!).

So, I figured Luffy would by Scarecrow, as he is dumb as a brick and wears a straw hat, so why not have a straw body too? Ussop was a great cowardly lion because he's...you know, a big freaking coward. Zoro would be Tinman because he was the only one who had a weapon and is prone to being injured (if you read the story, Tinman got that way because of self-afflicted injuries). For Dorothy, I was thinking between Nami and Vivi, but then I thought how Vivi was not THAT much of a main character, so Nami got the role. Vivi could be Glinda,or something like that. Toto could have been Chopper or Sanji, but Sanji should be him because he is already Nami's bitc....bitty slave. =p You casted Chopper greatly as the Oz because he could be intimidating at times but ridiculously UNintimidating in his usual form. As for Robin, I am not sure if she would be best for the Wicked Witch of the West because she isn't that devious...or evil. She could be...I dunno...maybe a humanoid poppy from the poppy field, or the Oz gatekeeper or something. I know she is important, but there are so many parts that do no suit her nonchalant demeanor.

In general, this pic is awesome in many ways, from lineart, detail, perspective and concept. If you ever have the urge to do more of this, I suggest the flying monkeys to be Marines!

Oh, one last thing...when I saw this pic and looked at Ussop, I thought "Man, what armpit hair he's got!"
